I have known about the
Soldiers to the Summit Himalayan Expedition for several months but I think that a lightbulb clicked on yesterday… I AM GOING TO NEPAL IN FOUR WEEKS! Wow. When I think back to five years ago is awesome to be presented with this opportunity. September 16th will be the 5 year anniversary of the car crash. I spent a lot of time last night thinking about how my life looked then and now. How simple choices have changed and shaped my life after. Proof that life is what you want to make out of it. Not just making the choice but putting action to those choices.

Laurence Nielson and Sherpa Ang Gyalzen recorded the first ascent of Lobuche East was on April 25, 1984. The peak is 20,075ft or 6119m above seal level. I have had a hard time finding much information on their first ascent other than they are the team that did it. Lobuche is considered a “trekking” peak near the
Khumbu Glacier.
In all honesty there is not a lot of information about this peak on the internet. I think this is due to how close this peak is to
Mt. Everest,
Cho Oyu,
Lhotse,
Amadablam,
Annapurna not to mention the countless other spectacular peaks in the area. I believe that this was a great choice of a peak to accomplish our goals in the mountains. I can not wait to see the size of this place.

I am REALLY looking forward to the flight into the mountains. There is nothing like looking at the mountains from a high point. I will alway remember the flights in and out of the Root Canal Glacier in Alaska. Remember how insignificant I felt with the scale of the mountains around me. From Kathmandu we will be flying into
Tenzing-Hillary Airport located in
Lukla. This is the definition of a small airport. I was interested to know that this is NOT the highest airport in the world. I had been told that bit of info by a few people but it turns out that there is an airport in China at 15,548 feet above sea level. Here is another photo of the airport in Lukla.

The thing that excites me the most about this trip is the very unique team that has been assembled to work together as we attempt this peak. There is a wide range of competent guides, accomplished alpinists, great athletes, and most importantly American hero’s. Most of the people on this team are a mixture of a couple of those categories. It is an honor to be with this team.

Here is my favorite quote about the Mountains: “To those who have struggled with them, the mountains reveal beauties that they will not disclose to those who make no effort. That is the reward the mountains give to effort. And it is because they have so much to give and give it so lavishly to those who will wrestle with them that men love the mountains and go back to them again and again. The mountains reserve their choice gifts for those who stand upon their summits.” –
Sir Francis Younghusband.
I am happy to be a part of this team as we endeavor to struggle with this mountain and enjoy the “choice gifts” it has for us.
